Ford goes to where the profits are, goodbye Australia!

Ban Ford logoFord Australia announced recently that by 2016 it was closing down their car plants at Geelong and Broadmeadows in Victoria, with 1200 workers to be made redundant. In addition, thousands more jobs will now also be threatened in industries and services that supply Ford.

The duplicity of this multinational giant knows no bounds, especially after receiving the Federal Government’s $34 million “co-investment” bail-out in 2011. Ford has sponged up to $1.1 billion off the Australian taxpayer over the past decade. Despite of all this assistance it has just dumped the Australian economy and its workers!

Compulsory income management: Say no! An attack on welfare rights!

Income Manag Protest AThe information below is a flier produced by SPAG (Single Parents Action Group) and SIMPla (Stop Income Management in Playford, South Australia), and distributed at a protest outside Nick Champion's electoral office on 20th May.

They’ll have 50-70 percent of their payments put onto the BasicsCard (people can also volunteer). It’s claimed Compulsory Income Management will improve health and financial situations, by ensuring payments are spent on “essentials”.

TPPA-11May B TPPA-11May A

Shirley Winton and Ted Murphy speaking at Community and Union Rally in Melbourne, May 11.

Below is a talk given by Shirley Winton, organiser with the Communication Workers Union – Postal Division (Vic), at the VictorianTrades Hall Council information evening on the implications of the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement. 3 May 2013.

I’m going to talk mainly about the Trans Pacific Partnership free trade agreement requirements for State Owned Enterprises, Public Services and Corporate Investor Rights and what it means for the last few remaining publicly owned, but corporatized entities, like Australia Post, Medibank, the NBN and even the recently announced decision by the Qld. premier not to privatise Queensland electricity.  All three clauses in the TPP are connected and should be viewed together.  Other speakers will talk about labour laws, PBS (health), and the erosion of democratic rights.

Tax the profits of mining monopolies

Australia is a country rich in natural resources. This sovereign wealth must belong to the Australian people and used for the benefit of the people and protect the environment.

BHP-Billiton, Rio Tinto, Xstrata, Chevron and other giant mining multinationals reap enormous profits from our national resources and the labour of workers.  They send most of these profits out of the country and pay little tax.  Mining profits of mining corporations have increased by more than 900% in the past 10 years.
