Nationalise fossil fuel monopolies for a rapid transition to clean energy!

 Spirit of Eureka

During the last decade the climate crisis has impacted severely on the Australian people and the biodiversity of the natural environment.

The climate crisis has been marked by a long drought across much of the country, with major river systems reduced to trickles, some choked by algae, dead fish and water-life. Yet other regions have suffered damaging floods and storms. Weather patterns have shifted, affecting both large and small scale agricultural production, especially wine and honey producers.

Storms and rising sea levels have threatened many coastal communities, while the bleaching of coral reefs continues. Shifting sea temperatures and currents have also affected fish populations and traditional fishing grounds.

Last summer’s horrendous bushfires that overwhelmed communities and fire and emergency services across Australia have rammed home the reality of climate warming and the urgency of taking measures to reverse it.

This was written in the immediate aftermath of the Friday 26 June ASIO raids conducted against the homes of NSW parliamentarian Shaoquett Moselmane and his staffer John Zhang, which are the first to be carried out under the ‘foreign interference’ laws introduced in June 2018, ostensibly intended to prevent foreign governments from influencing our political affairs in ways detrimental to Australia’s national interest.

The 2018 ‘foreign interference’ legislation

The new legislation includes the Espionage and Foreign Interference Act (EFI), and the subsequent Foreign Influence Transparency Scheme. The EFI introduces forty-five new offences related to treason, sabotage and dealing with information that harms ‘national security’, the definition of which was modified to include, “the country’s political, military or economic relations with another country or other countries”.
